IPv6 Addressing

Training Format: e-Topic
Course Code: NET123

Description
One of the main motivations for deploying IPv6 is the increased address space. There is concern that the demand for unique IP addresses will exceed the capacity of the 32 bit address space of IPv4. IPv6 uses addresses that are 128 bits in length. This e-Topic explains the new format for addresses used in IPv6 based on this 128 bit space. It includes descriptions of the different types of addresses defined for IPv6, including Unicast, Anycast, and Multicast addresses, and addresses that are reserved for special purposes. Finally, the different ways that a node can obtain an IPv6 address are explained, including how a node can create an address on its own using Stateless Address Autoconfiguration.
