Description
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has moved from being a leading edge technology to a widely deployed service. Today, there are many options for obtaining VoIP in almost any home as a standard residential service - from cable companies, traditional telephone companies, independent VoIP providers and others. This eTopic explains the basic functions of how VoIP works for a home user, without getting into detailed protocol definitions . It also discusses the challenges that currently face VoIP Service Providers, including supporting Enhanced 911 service, lawful intercept (phone tapping), contributing to the Universal Service Fund, and providing non-stop power.
