Description
Third Generation (3G) cellular systems enable high bit rate access (up to 2 Mb/s or more) enabling use of Internet applications for mobile users. This course introduces the motivations for 3G, the evolutionary paths from 2G GSM and CDMA to 3G, how 3G enables mobile Internet capabilities, and highlights the two major standards for 3G- UMTS/W-CDMA and CDMA2000®. The challenges presented by IP mobility are introduced and two different solutions for handling IP mobility are described; the GPRS solution for UMTS and the Mobile IP solution for CDMA2000®. Students interested in taking Internet applications "on the road" will want to take this course.
