Description
This course is intended for students interested in understanding the 3GPP UMTS LTE (Long-Term Evolution), the radio access network evolution, and SAE (System Architecture Evolution), the infrastructure evolution of UMTS supporting LTE. With the current dominance of UMTS in 3G worldwide deployments, LTE/SAE is likely to be the dominant 4G technology as well. Understanding this technology will be essential for anyone planning for the next generation in mobile broadband radio technology. This course has been designed to introduce the major goals and concepts of LTE and SAE as well as the major new network elements and to provide an overview of the major standardized interfaces and protocols. To help tie these concepts together, a high-level description of an LTE handover is illustrated. This course is the essential foundation for understanding other courses that dig deeper into the details of LTE and/or SAE.
