Description
This course is intended for students who have already been introduced to the high level architecture and concepts for next generation UMTS LTE (Long Term Evolution, the radio access network evolution) and SAE (System Architecture Evolution, the infrastructure evolution of UMTS supporting LTE). The objective of this course is to quickly solidify those architectures and concepts by the use of three important operational scenarios (with message flows) that illustrate how the LTE/SAE Evolved Packet System (EPS) functions. The first scenario illustrates the procedure for user powering up and attaching or registering with the LTE/SAE network. The second scenario illustrates the procedure for that user to request and initiate a multimedia service. The third scenario illustrates the procedure for an active handover (during a multimedia session) from one eNodeB to another eNodeB.
With the current dominance of UMTS in 3G worldwide deployments, LTE/SAE is likely to be the dominant 4G technology as well. Understanding this technology will be essential for anyone planning for the next generation in mobile broadband radio technology.
