Description
A key motivation behind deploying a softswitch is to allow distributed functions and products to work together by defining standard interfaces between them. The Softswitch Protocols course provides a detailed explanation of how different protocols support the internal workings of a softswitch and also to allow it to interconnect with other networks. Thorough examples are used to show how MEGACO is used within a softswitch to control Media Gateways from a central Media Gateway Controller, and how SIP is used to set up a call between different softswitches. Some familiarity with MEGACO and SIP on the part of the student is useful. Lesson 2 introduces protocols employed to allow a softswitch to interconnect with a circuit-switched network that is using Signaling System 7 (SS7) for call signaling. Once again, complete examples are used to show how SIGTRAN is used to support the transport of SS7 information over an IP network and how SIP-T is used to pass SS7 messages within SIP.
